Barrian Cup 2011 & Dave Cowdry Trophy
4th June commencing at 2pm
organised by Barry Camera Club
RESULTS BELOW
The judge was Leo Rich ARPS, DPAGB, EFIAPorganised by Barry Camera Club
St Francis Millennium Hall,
Porth Y Castell,
Barry Garden Suburb,
Barry,
Vale of Glamorgan
- Pied Flycatchers by Paul Richards (scored 18)
- Old V8 by Roy Peters (scored 16)
- In Training by Jill Baxter (scored 17)
- Liwa Sand Dunes by Mike Cullis (scored 16)
- Waders Fly The Waves by Andrew Baxter (scored 19)
Inn Focus first, 89; Port Talbot second 88; and Tenby third 86.
Gwyfa & Methyr Tydfil next on 83.
Report by Harry Gardiner who attended (with Ray Hine) on Tenby's behalf
At the annual Barrian Cup (held, surprisingly in Barry! ) hot competition resulted in the emergence of Inn Focus neck and neck with Port Talbot for the lead. Leo Rich, the judge, had 125 prints to comment on; his insightful readings of the images were short, so sometimes followed by a surprising mark. His good humour and enjoyment sustained everybody’s interest. No one was too bothered about the marks…… ( I’m kidding..) He had had the prints in advance and clearly had looked carefully at them.
Tenby were behind the two leaders, but level pegging with the rest of the pack for the final round . Andrew Baxter’s shot of waders flying in front of a wave got a 19 and pulled us ahead of the pack, but Port Talbot were already too far ahead of us, and Inn Focus collected a final 18 to just leapfrog Port Talbot at the post as winners, because Port Talbot’s final small windmill print got only 16; - bit harsh on size there Leo!
Three 20’s were awarded, and seven 19s.
It was disappointing for all the clubs that did enter and did attend that no-one from Inn Focus was there to collect their award, but the quality of their images and the range of subjects was clear. They are a force to reckon with; quality versatility and variety! But so, for similar reasons are Port Talbot !
The Dave Cowdrey Trophy went to ‘Elgol’ a seascape from an Inn Focus member, who again was not present……. Distant clubs come to resent entering, driving miles to attend and then getting a low total like 65 when winner doesn’t turn up and attend; its not in the rules that they should but with 100 club members there whose club didn’t win it seems a discourtesy not to be there. Perhaps Barry C C could communicate this to Inn Focus as well as everybody’s congratulations on winning.
Leo Rich usually marked down images with technical defects quite a lot, and with obvious digital manipulation also, but a couple of very very minimalist images did well, one that could have been a pen and ink study; another bold more complex pen and ink-like study (find edges filter to you photoshop nerds ) got a low mark. No nature shot got higher than 19, quite a few 16 or less. Of the few landscapes some did well ( snow in really remote Scotland ) most didn’t. To me it seems time that open comps like this were specified as such so judges did not impose non-existent photo-reality rules on creative images’ marks. There were some really strong creative images that only got 16 or less. But Leo did very well; entertaining, kept to time and very knowledgeable; its really worth going to see him in action.
With a big entry like 26 clubs, 5 prints each does not give the judge a chance to comment very fully in 2 hours; four prints per club might be better.
An impressive afternoon, well organised, at which Barry C C member Mike Lewis was awarded his Honoury Membership of the Welsh Photographic Federation for his long service to Barry Camera Club, Welsh Photography and the Welsh Federation.
Harry Gardiner AWPF OFC and zimmer frame. With thanks to Ray Hine for the lift….

- Mackerel For Lunch by Jill Baxter (scored 18)
- Head & Shoulders Above by Dave Bolton (scored 19)
- Kite Surfer by Mike Cullis (scored 18)
- A Venetian Ferry by Gill Mackay (scored 15)
- Pure Tango by Roy Packer (scored 19)
Trostre came 1st with 107: Tenby came 2nd with 106: Llanelli came 3rd with 104.
The three top clubs were tied on 87 until the last round resulting in a nail biting finish, not decided until the very last photo. The judge expressed a strong dislike of any image which he considered had more of an artistic quality rather than a straight photo, commenting "if you want to produce a painting buy a brush". He commented on two images in the competition saying they were 'marked down' considerably because of this; one a lovely subway shot and the other our own beautiful Venetian Ferry by Gill Mackay.
