Painting With Light 18th April

TENBY AND DISTRICT CAMERA CLUB

‘Painting with Light’, this was the theme title of the clubs guest speaker Rob Lloyd FRPS, DPAGB, EFIAP on Thursday 18^th April at the Community Hall, St Florence.

On this visit to the Camera Club Rob enthralled the members with his superb landscape and portrait photographs. Rob is a member of the Merthyr Tydfal Camera club and has done particularly well in there club competitions this year gaining a 1^st place in both colour and monochrome prints and a joint 3^rd in monochrome.

Ron explained to members there is no better way of bringing a dramatic scene to life than with a hint of movement, whether it is a branch swaying in the breeze or long grasses being buffered around. Look for creative possibilities, a black dramatic sky is always impressive and with any portrait, the focus is on the eyes or actually on the bridge between them.

Rob showed members many of the images taken in Switzerland in the Zermatt area, where he uses the natural light to its full advantage and then to a winter sunrise in the Brecon Beacons and many landscapes in the Welsh valleys. His portrait images of the Minor’s together with all of the landscapes showed what an excellent photographer Rob Lloyd is.

WPF news flash 13/04/2013

Hi everyone,

Yet more sad news in this edition of Newsflash with the passing of Len Beard, a founder member of Velindre and Trostre Camera Club. Len is the third WPF club member to pass away in a short space of time. All will be sorely missed.

It perhaps serves to remind us to enjoy to the full our shared passion for photography and the friendships it brings.

Audio Visual with Roy Packer

TENBY AND DISTRICT CAMERA CLUB

Club night was well attended on Thursday 11^th April for the judging of the Audio Visual (AV) entries. Before the evening got underway Roy Packer asked members to stand for a one minute silence in memory of Donna Longhurst who was a past member of the club.

Only six photographers entered this internal competition, Roy Packer was the judge for the evening and although he was judging he asked members at random what they thought of the presentations. The first entry to be shown was ‘Images of Abu Dhabi’ followed by ‘Bodnant Gardens’ and then ‘A Day at the Fairground’, a further three were then shown ‘Botanical Garden of Wales’, ‘A Brief Visit to Nolton Haven’ and finally ‘A Magical Village – Portmeirion’.

Applause was given to all entries with many positive comments being given. Roy Commented on how they had all been put together with good transitions, he also commented that some pictures were not sharp and to many of the same subject being used. Roy concluded saying he hoped more entries would be presented in the 2013-2014 winter programme.

The winning AV presentation was ‘A Magical Village Portmeirion by Tony Charles.

Following the coffee break, Roy packer showed members a video ‘Birds in Hungary’ that was taken with a Nikon D3S camera, on his recent visit to Hungary; it is a new project for Roy and as he say ‘It’s work in progress’.

4th April with Chris Warren

Six months ago, Chris Warren, a commercial photographer gave club members an insight to his ‘Twilight’ range of images. On Thursday 4^th April, Chris was back, this time giving members an insight to his commissioned work and his stock photography.

He explained that with the commissioned work the client would give him a brief or script and he would then visit, look, study and using timetables for trains, buses and ferries, ordinance survey maps to look for vantage points and how to get there, obtaining permissions to cross fields and alike.

Chris has been commissioned by Welsh Assembly, W.D.A, Cadw, National Park and Arriva Trains to name but a few. A lot of his work for the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park can be seen in the 2013 edition of Coast to Coast.

The subjects vary from client to client, one shoot he recalled was images of cruise ships around Wales, the most difficult part of any shoot is weather, you are all set, you have picked your vantage point, the coaches have dispersed to various locations and then it rains; you hope the weather breaks, if not you start all over again.

Following a coffee break Chris explained to club members ‘what stock photography’ is; “what makes a good stock photograph, it’s just a photo, not a second class photo or snap, not fine art, but a photograph that has a commercial use”. Chris then explained that each photograph had a text – keywords which had to tell a story, so that the agency could than select by key words images that were on offer.

Chris showed several images of his stock collection around Britain and Europe. He concluded by saying “Above all always enjoy your photography and have fun”.

In the absent of the Chairman Neil Thomas (Vice Chairman) thanked Chris and looked forward to him talking to the club in the future.
