TENBY AND DISTRICT CAMERA CLUB

A challenging evening 23^rd May for the clubs summer workshop photographers was a visit to Carew Mill. Ray Hines the tutor for this workshops asked members to look at landscapes and to consider the unusual, try different techniques using different apertures and shutter speeds. The weather turned very cold and lots of grey sky tested the photographer’s skill.

On Thursday evening 30^th May members met at the Jameston Village community Hall where Ray asked members to discuss their images and in turn he gave his own view on how and why the image could be improved. It was a useful evening with the club members looking forward to next weeks shoot in Tenby when the subject will be ‘Twilight Images.

16/05/2013 First workshop with Ray Hinds

TENBY AND DISTRICT CAMERA CLUB

Thursday 16^th May was the clubs first meeting of the summer programme held at Jameston Community Hall, a workshop ‘Taking Better Photograph’s’ was introduced by Ray Hinds an experienced photographer and one of the founder members of the club.

Ray began the evening for beginners in photography talking about aperture, depth of field and using shutters and apertures creatively. The evening was attended by 12 members of the club with a few new faces who we hope will continue to come along. During the coffee break it gave the members chance to talk to each other and discuss any issues they may have.

Ray continued the evening showing many examples of his own images ranging from landscapes, sport and wild life, and even obscure images that make that a very interesting subject. The workshop will run for 6 weeks with visits to various locations to use the tips and instruction in a practical way.

     

                                    

Thurs 2nd May Leigh Woolford

What a wonderful conclusion to the 2012—2013 winter programme at the camera club meeting on Thursday 2^nd May. The guest speaker was Leigh Woolford AWPF, EFIAP a member of Gwynfa Camera club, who this year won the best coloured projected image at the 2013 Welsh Salon of Photography. Leigh visits many clubs and organisations giving talks together with his judging duties, he is also responsible for the Welsh Photographic Federation Website news. His talk was titled ‘A Search for Focus’, he told club members that he was introduced to the workings of the camera at a very early age by his father who like Leigh was passionate about his hobby. To give those present an insight to where his own subject matter came from, we were shown images that his father had taken, then Leigh visited those same locations 50 years on to capture, in his way, that same image.

It was in 1981 that Leigh owned his first SLR camera and his motivation was being a member of the camera club and seeing other peoples images, he has been greatly inspired by the works of internationally known photographers such as Winston Lik, Todd Webb and Ansel Adams to name but a few.

Leigh was born and bred in Pontypridd and uses his home town in many of his images. His talk brought us on a journey through the titles of motivation, inspiration, urban environment, people and candid images, with his own interpretation and often humorous comments and stories on the places and people he has met.

Leigh finished the evening with a taster for a future visit to the club on the subject of ‘Iceland’

Camera club work shops are being held during the summer months and the club will meet again at St Florence Community Hall on 5^th September for the 2013-2014 winter programme.

Mini Comp Transport 25th April

TENBY AND DISTRICT CAMERA CLUB

The last mini-competition of the winter programme took place on Thursday 25^th April at the club meeting in the Community Hall, St Florence.

The theme of the competition was ‘Transport’ and thirty nine images were shown and judged by the members. In third place was ‘Waiting for MOT’ by Neil Thomas and in joint first place was ‘Man and Machine’ by Dave Bolton together with ‘Giants of Steam’ by Roy Packer, once again a very high standard of photography with images of ships, boats and planes, cars bikes and even prams.

Following the coffee break the members were then shown a short video of Ty-Hafod the Hospice for Children. Members were asked to subscribe this week to a fund raising appeal.

The evening concluded with Chairman Roy Packer showing members images of his travels to Norway in 2012, to primarily shoot images of the White Tailed Sea Eagles. His adventure started with a flight from Cardiff to Amsterdam changing planes at the infamous Schipol Airport, from there flying to Trondiem Airport, Norway and then a 190km road trip to the village of Lauvsnes in the district of Flatanger. Roy explained to the audience that only one shop, a mini supermarket was open for business. Roy’s images of the White Tailed Sea Eagle catching fish let members in awe of the magnificence of this bird, which is the 4^th largest eagle in the world. Roy and his party had the exclusive use of a purpose built bird hide which enabled him to photograph Bull Finches, Eurasian Jays, Red Squirrels and Goshawks. Roy concluded his talk with a short sequence of images of the buildings and the majestic landscapes around the Fjords of Nord-Trondelag.

Painting With Light 18th April

TENBY AND DISTRICT CAMERA CLUB

‘Painting with Light’, this was the theme title of the clubs guest speaker Rob Lloyd FRPS, DPAGB, EFIAP on Thursday 18^th April at the Community Hall, St Florence.

On this visit to the Camera Club Rob enthralled the members with his superb landscape and portrait photographs. Rob is a member of the Merthyr Tydfal Camera club and has done particularly well in there club competitions this year gaining a 1^st place in both colour and monochrome prints and a joint 3^rd in monochrome.

Ron explained to members there is no better way of bringing a dramatic scene to life than with a hint of movement, whether it is a branch swaying in the breeze or long grasses being buffered around. Look for creative possibilities, a black dramatic sky is always impressive and with any portrait, the focus is on the eyes or actually on the bridge between them.

Rob showed members many of the images taken in Switzerland in the Zermatt area, where he uses the natural light to its full advantage and then to a winter sunrise in the Brecon Beacons and many landscapes in the Welsh valleys. His portrait images of the Minor’s together with all of the landscapes showed what an excellent photographer Rob Lloyd is.
